2020 AWARDS SEASON IS UPON US

Jury presentations for the annual South Australian Architecture Awards program will kick off all day this Saturday, 14 March. This year Pembroke’s Middle School Redevelopment has been nominated in three categories including educational, interior and sustainable architecture, while Carrickalinga Beach House and Hawthorn Residence will be judged in the new houses and alterations/additions categories.

The new multi-storey Pembroke Middle School Redevelopment has been designed as a vertical ‘learning village’ with discreet neighbourhoods and a central atrium as its town square. The layout of teaching, break out spaces and extensive internal glazing have been curated to foster interaction between staff, students and community across all three levels of the building. A complex triangular site, together with the School’s bold aspirations for a progressive and vibrant design drove the building’s unique and dynamic architectural form and internal volumes.

Nestled into the base of the hills, Carrickalinga Beach House is a retreat from busy city life for the joint owners – two city based families who share the relaxed lifestyle on offer, sometimes together, sometimes separately. It’s spare, uncomplicated yet welcoming form and interiors reflect the easy, relaxed lifestyle enjoyed by occupants, allowing them maximum time for either active beach-side pursuits or a more contemplative outlook.

Starting with a confession, Hawthorn Residence is not an addition but rather a deletions and alterations. Originally designed by Newell Platten and slightly transformed over the years, we were engaged to design an outcome that would provide a more logical relationship of spaces to their proposed functions and maximise opportunities for environmental and functional improvements. The result was to strategically remove walls and unsympathetic extensions to provide access to better natural light, improve the functions of internal spaces and restore the external façade to its original footprint making better access to northern light in the garden spaces.

Each of these projects demonstrates our deep commitment to enhancing people’s lives through great design and we are excited to share more about our process and outcomes with the juries and public on presentation day. For more info, download the session times available here.

In other news, Pembroke’s new art, science, technology and enterprise building has also been nominated in the National Learning Environments Australasia Awards for a New Facility over $8 million and the Innovative Education Initiative category. These awards are set to be announced in May 2020 at the 20th Annual Conference in Christchurch, New Zealand and will be great to see this project showcased amongst the best in international education facility design.
