The Anzac Centenary Memorial Walk is a 'memorial for all, not a few'. The project seeks to deliver a memorial space within an urban environment that is simple, elegant and reflective.

Officially opened on 23 April 2016, the Memorial Walk is South Australia’s major public realm project commemorating 100 years since our involvement in the First World War. The project was jointly funded by the Commonwealth Government, the State Government and Adelaide City Council.

Kintore Avenue is an important link between Adelaide’s principal shopping precinct Rundle Mall, the cultural precinct along North Terrace and the River Torrens. Previously, a narrow bitumen footpath with minimal street lighting and plantings, the road was dominated by car parks and a solid masonry brick fence with no public views of Government House. This project has transformed Kintore Avenue into a public space for gathering, and a place for education, reflection and contemplation.

The project has seen the first amendment to the Government House boundary in 88 years, by widening the avenue and shifting the boundary by 10m west, 2700m₂ has been gained for the public realm. The new boundary wall that combines 90º and 45º angled steel blades, opens up views inside while maintaining visual privacy to specific areas within Government House.

An interpretive wall with etched markers and imagery represents the diversity and breadth of those involved in service, and commemorate all Australian service men and women who have died in conflicts. Polished black granite used throughout the site encourages the reflection of self in a moment of respect

and remembrance.

Founded upon simple and strong spatial order, the Memorial Walk is designed to accommodate everyday movement, as well as larger events without losing any sense of its purpose.
