Despite its historical context, Baliol is clearly the new kid on the block. The barn shaped frontage gives way to an edgy modernist building form that responds to the contemporary ease and practicality of busy family life.
The layout of the house is surprisingly modest for its location, which is characterised by large homes in a landscape setting, and the architecture captures a feeling of understated luxury that is engaging and enduring.
A concrete plinth grounds the two building volumes and creates a unifying design aesthetic at a large scale. The interior design treatment provides movement, texture and colour at a complementary scale and quality to the building.
Sustainability was considered early in the orientation of the house for solar access and shading, and features include double glazing, hydronic underfloor heating and insulated slab. The owners have a productive garden at the back and plans for getting chickens and bees.
