A small addition to the side of an existing residence has created a work-from-home studio that capitalises on the long views and shafts of light afforded to the spaces in-between tightly packed inner- suburban houses.

The new addition opens up and connects to another workspace within the existing residence. The two spaces are connected by a book/ display shelf unit. The design resolution prioritised natural light and the attainment of long views despite being located in the inner eastern suburbs and situated on the southern side of the existing dwelling. Long views were achieved in the space between two houses with a façade of full double glazing.

From here the philosophy was to enhance what we were able to glean from the site by the utilisation of natural materials and a partially exposed steel roof structure. Careful consideration was given to the relationship of the structural elements to highlight the drama of the skylight floating well above the exposed rafters and allows for a slender roof space that is edged by an exposed PFC that cantilevers in the foreground of the view to the distant trees.

The materials for the walls and floor are slate and face brick which act to give the space an external feel that settles it into the landscape. This is further enhanced by the slender planter that penetrates into the space to literally bring plants indoors. The desk is sculptural so as not to be a desk when not in use, the material reflects the client’s passion for modern Scandinavian design.
