The Toorak Gardens Residence is an extension to an Eastern suburbs bungalow. The project involved adding new living and utility areas to complement the existing private spaces.
The design of the new building establishes strong visual and physical connections to the outdoors.
The white central sculptural form captures natural light and provides a backdrop for the theatre of the natural landscape. The north facing façade is positioned adjacent to an existing deciduous tree which shades the glass in summer and enables sun penetration deep into the interior in winter.
The Toorak Gardens Residence has a fluid overlapping floorplan across three levels. This has enabled better operational outcomes for the occupants and injected energy and life into their existing home. The large central living volume crisply detailed to encourage contemplation and calm. These central spaces are surrounded by utility areas which are roughly detailed and feather out to the landscape.
