Compact and highly crafted, Unley Residence explores the possibilities of a compact inner city site & beyond.

The design aims to maximise the building footprint whilst retaining an open and expansive relationship with the outdoors, thanks in no small part to neighbouring front yards and chimneys which enhance the views and visual interest afforded to the collection of differently oriented windows.

The two main forms are simple box like structures but it is their interaction with each other and relationship to the ground plane that provides a compelling complexity. One slightly elevated the other one partially sunken into the ground.

One with a façade of northern windows the other one crashing into it like a large boulder helps to define the zones within the living spaces and creates a dramatic gesture surrounded by glass. The sunken main bedroom encourages sleeping at ‘ground level’, affording an intimate relationship with the adjacent garden.
